ramcity productions is a film and television production company that specializes in quality urban projects. ramcity has been in business since 1997 and is headed by ceo ben ramsey. ramcity productions has produced two feature films, several short films and is self distributing a tai chi training video.
ben ramsey - ceo
in 1996 ben ramsey wrote a screenplay entitled "the big hit" which caught the attention of wesley snipes� amen ra productions, famed action director john woo. it was purchased by tri-star pictures and made into the #1 hit feature film starring mark wahlberg. in 1998, ramsey became a multiple hyphenate on "love and a bullet" acting as writer/producer/director on the action-packed independent film starring famed hip-hop artist treach from naughty by nature. "love and a bullet" has become one of the highest grossing "urban films" on the home video/dvd market and has had numerous airings on hbo and cinemax.
ramsey has recently written "static" for producer neal moritz ("fast and the furious" and "xxx" franchises") and columbia pictures, the long awaited superhero movie "luke cage" for marvel entertainment and moritz. he just finished the live action adaptation of the popular cartoon "dragonball z" for 20th century fox and the third james paterson screen adaptation "roses are red" for paramount pictures and actor morgan freeman. ramsey is co-producer of the soon-to-be released independent feature film "the fifth commandment" staring rick yune, bokeem woodbine and keith david.
layla mashavu � creative executive producer/director
layla mashavu came to the indie filmmaking scene with her first short film, "through thick and thin". it screened at various film festivals and won awards at the worldfest-houston international film festival and filmworks 2000. mashavu received an award for excellence from the hollywood foreign press association for outstanding professional promise based on the film. urban entertainment picked up "through thick and thin" for internet distribution. it was on the top rated list for several weeks.
her other film "cuzin sista" has screened at various festivals as well. "cuzin sista" is an intimate and heartwarming story of one gullah woman�s journey through life. the film surveys of the gullah/geechee and african american history of charleston, south carolina, taking a look at gentrification, assimilation and integration. it is now available on dvd at www.cuzinsista.com.
mashavu was the producer and program director of black and brown shorts, a short film showcase that celebrated and encouraged independent cinema. companies including fox searchlight and overbrook entertainment have participated in black and brown shorts. mashavu turned black and brown shorts into a non-profit entity called cinematic images foundation, inc in 2002. that same year, mashavu was a programmer for the ifp/west los angeles film festival.
mashavu is currently the creative executive for ramcity productions where she develops and produces the company�s in house projects. her third short film "karayzay" was her first directing effort under the ramcity banner. at ramcity, mashavu has produced two more shorts and a tai chi training video. outside of ramcity, mashavu produced the short film "state of grace", which won the 2005 melvin van peebles award. her second directorial effort under ramcity, "inspired by�" is now on the film festival circuit. mashavu is in principal photography on a feature film that ramcity is co-producing with 1976 films called "a good day to be black & sexy."
